Leigh-on-sea, come find our new Now, Voyager concession within the fabulous aspiring Pin-up’s dream boutique Purr-part of vintage furniture experience What the Butler Saw

Purr calls for pin up kittens & cool kats to come have a nose at clothing by brands like Bettie Page, Stockings & Romance, Hell Bunny, Sailor Jerry & Collectif. It’s nice to see a boutique really making the effort to cater for guys as well as gals. Purr also stocks limited signed pin up prints from legendary pin up photographer Mendoza of Retro Photostudio. The unit next door to Purr is rumoured to soon be full of vintage clothing…

What the Butler Saw is a charmingly crowded collection of retro & vintage furniture & home nick-nacks.

Drawn by the strange array of suitcases attached to wall, we wandered into another What The Butler Saw unit-Tom Foolery. Bespoke jewellery label features beautiful, original designs like letters cast with beautiful swirls behind them to the likeness of the first letter in a fairy tale…

Next time you fancy a day trip to the seaside, be sure to include a visit to What The Butler Saw 113-115 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, SS9 1JH.

Allow us to share the moment we fell in love with The Mummers with you…catching them on Jools Holland, we fell down the rabbit hole to ‘March of the Dawn’  and never looked back… “I wake up, before the dawn /Grab my coat, take a walk whilst telling myself / To open up a brand new page / Underline the title of this chapter of mine / And it’s a brand new day, a beautiful night, the rest of my life…”

The Mummers stand for endurance, ever striving for the ultimate fairytale ending no matter what tragic or mundane events unfold. They certainly do have a tale to tell, if you are inclined to take the time to listen.

Raissa fronts The Mummers-a style icon in her own right, wearing whatever she feels like-sod fashion…typically with Converse on her feet. At the KCLSU this week, she wore a retro 80s lace Barbie wedding fantasy dress, teamed with a 20s flapper style feather head piece and of course, her well-loved Converse.

Lovely lyrics & telling tales,

When we were asked to guest blog for Vintage Victory, we were thrilled! Our assignment-a night on the town at the sold out Blitz Party, Shoreditch to have a nose at what people considered their forties finest.

Walking into the Village Underground lined with sandbags, it felt like we had gone underground. The dinge & gloom added to that 40s feeling, followed by a raid siren accompanied by confetti raining on the dance floor as we headed to the makeshift bar. Drinks were served in tea cups & the ‘ration card’ drinks menu featured clever specialty cocktails. Our favourite was ‘The Blitz’-Vodka shaken with Elderflower & Fresh Lemon, charged with fizz, served in a champagne flute.  There were four others with equally cute names like ‘Ginger Daisy’ & ‘Gin Fizz’.

On with the style hunt…the ladies were wearing a variety of tea dresses-for the most part 80s dresses, complimented by 40s styling-40s make-up & seamed stockings. Lots of gals added faux or real fur to their outfits-we even saw a fox stole. There were also lots of army & sailor outfits…there was even a Rosie the Riveter. In ladies locks were flowers, fascinators & hats. Suprisingly, there was a lack of victory rolls, gals going for wavier styles instead.

Men had mostly gone for army or sailor outfits. Lots of guys went for the easy option of a white shirt, dark trousers and braces. Others went for more of a prohibition suit look. There was even one Charlie Chaplin! Whatever people were wearing, everyone had made an effort to dress up for the occasion. Some just pulled something right out of their already glamorous wardrobes, others borrowed from family & friends.

Assignment complete, we headed to the dance floor. Naturally packed, we squeezed in for a few dances along to the live band-the highlight of the night. Tickets are now available for the next Blitz Party on Saturday 14th May…get in quick if you fancy it, they sell out fast!

Victory rolls & cocktails,

We have become slightly addicted to vintage hair. Styles so voluminous & shiny they call to our very hearts and make boys’ heads turn…but how to achieve this on a day-to-day basis?…and without becoming rather vain?

Ladies, allow us to take you on a vintage hair journey (something to do as you slow down & relax for the holidays)…

The vintage hairstyle obsession began with a trip to East London’s Powder Room. After a speedy make-up & in a jiffy 50’s style hair do for a birthday party, we were in love.

As we watched the talented Powderpuff Girl expertly roll our fringes (while being treated to tea & biscuits-yum!), we were inspired to try it at home and have never looked back! Firstly, we recommend that you find a vintage hairstylist in your area, and get your hair styled. This should only cost around £10-£15. It is a good way to get to grips with vintage hair if its a new world to you.

You can also pick up good tips. For instance, when back-combing make sure you back-comb straight and not at an angle, i.e. hacking the hair, to avoid hair damage.

Now you know what you are trying to achieve at home, free up some time, turn on your computer and log on to the Youtube tutorials. Start with rolling your fringe & practicing victory rolls, shown in the below tutorial. Once you get the hang of this, it can become an easy everyday hairstyle taking only about 10 mins.

If you can’t get the right amount of volume, you can roll you hair around hair padding, which is available in blonde, black & brown on eBay for around £5.

Practice until you are feeling slightly cocky, then you can try some extra special Updos like the one below. Should you achieve this, we cannot promise you won’t become vain, the compliments will be flying!

You could then venture on to the wonderful world of pin curling for bombshell hair!

You can also purchase PDF files of vintage beauty guides at Retro Belles.

Of course, now that your hair is styled you will surely feel the need to decorate it with your collection of Now, Voyager goodies! We would love to see pics of your vintage hair styles & send in any hair tips you have! Please e-mail them to [email protected]

Fancy documenting all your efforts? You can get dressed up with friends & have a retro photoshoot experience with Mendoza’s Retro Photostudio. Shoots can be arranged online. You can even get a special price when visiting Vintage Vogue fair in Brentwood, with prices starting under £20. There is also talented hair stylist on hand-Jill of Hair Aid Shelter (we can never resist!) who can fix your hair in any Updo for £10. Below is Fliss & Rayna’s friendship photo by Mendoza.

We thought we would throw in a 50’s make-up tutorial, for good measure!

Happy Holidays, Vintage Lovers!

Cake & Kisses,

Felicity & Jess
